Articles of Faith
Adopted in 1815 by the Founders
We believe in one God the creator, and preserver of the universe, who possesses every natural and moral perfection; who governs and disposes of all things, in the wisest and best manner and according to the Council of His own will, and who is a Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, all the same in essence, and equal in every perfection.

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were written by men divinely inspired and are a perfect rule of faith and practice. We believe that man was created Holy, but ruined himself by sin, and in consequence of this all mankind are by nature sinners, and justly exposed to the penalty of the divine law.

We believe that one of the persons of the divine Trinity, who in the economy of Redemption is called the “Son of God” assumed the character of Mediator, by being personally united to human nature, that He made such an atonement for sin, by shedding his own blood that God can consistently with justice bestow pardon and eternal life on the believing and penitent; that He arose from the dead, ascended to the right hand of the Father and maketh continual intercession for his Church.

We believe that mankind are free moral agents; that the offers of the Gospel are freely and sincerely made to them; that they are capable of complying with the terms of salvation which God has proposed; and that nothing keeps men from salvation but the criminal obstinancy of their evil hearts.

We believe that the hearts of the children of men are by nature so fully set within them to do evil that if left to themselves, not withstanding the various means used with them, they would work out their final ruin, and on this account we believe that all who will ever be saved, were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world, that they all while in this life, will be the divine blessing on instituted means, be convicted of their sins, and experience the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the Holy Ghost, and be kept by the power of God, through faith unto salvation.

We believe that all people are under obligation to render perfect obedience to the law of God, to employ their facilities in his service and render unconditional submission to his will.

We believe that God has appointed one seventh part of time to be observed as Holy; that the first day of the week is the Christian sabbath; that regular and devout attendance on the reading and preaching of the Word, and on worship of God in secret, in the family, and in public, is an important duty and privilege; and that all Christian people are bound to use energetic measures for the suppression of vice, for the support of Christian institutions where they reside, for the enlargement of Christ’s kingdom in the world, and the salvation of mankind on the plan of the Gospel.

We believe that none ought to be admitted to a public profession of religion, or to the fellowship of a Christian Church, but such as given evidence of repentance towards God, and faith towards our Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe that the Christian Sacraments are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper; that the former is to be administered to visible believers and their households, and the latter to those who profess their faith in Christ and walk agreeably to the Gospel.

We believe that the members of a Christian church are bound to watch over each other with tenderness and fidelity and to use Gospel means to reclaim all who may err in faith or practice.

We believe that the dead will all be raised; that God has appointed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness by Jesus Christ, who will then receive the righteous to endless happiness and sentence the wicked to endless misery; and then deliver up his mediatorial kingdom to God, even the Father, that God may be all in all. - Amen.
