The Covenant

You do now in the presence of the heart-searching God, and before angels and men, choose the only living and true God as your God, and the object of your supreme affection, unlimited confidence and highest enjoyment. You choose God the Father as your father and Lawgiver; God the Son, in the character of Mediator and your Redeemer; and God the Holy Spirit as your Teacher, Sanctifier and Comforter.

You do wholly renounce the service of Satan and the errors and sins of this evil world.

You receive the Holy Scriptures as the lively oracles of God, and as your standard of faith and practice.

You promise to receive in love the pure doctrines of the Gospel, as you find them taught in the Word of God; and to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints.

You do engage to sanctify the Lord’s day, and to attend the public worship of God and the ordinances of the Gospel in the society and fellowship of Christ’s followers, as Divine providence shall give you opportunity; to use your endeavors to promote the moral and religious improvement of all that are or may be committed to your care; and to adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour, by a holy life, and pious conversation.

You do now enter into solemn covenant that, while you are continued in this place, you will extend a tender and faithful watchfulness over the members of this Church, feel towards them and treat them as your brethren in the bonds of Christian affection; that you will endeavor to promote the peace, the edification and purity of this Church; and that you will submit cheerfully to the government and discipline that Christ has instituted for the good order and building up of his people.

You also engage to use your best endeavors, by your prayers, your influence, and the various other means that God may put in your power, to promote the enlargement and prosperity of the Redeemer’s kingdom and the conversion and salvation of your fellow men.

Finally you engage with humility and a deep sense of your imperfections and insufficiency, to look to your heavenly Father for the teaching, the guidance, and the quickening influence of the Holy Spirit, that you may fulfill your covenant obligations, persevere in the divine course, and receive the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.  -  Amen.
